Single sign-on
Let members sign in to the dashboard through your identity provider with OpenID Connect or SAML 2.0, and require it.
Single sign-on (SSO) lets your organization's people sign in to the coss.com dashboard through your identity provider: Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, or any other OpenID Connect or SAML 2.0 provider. It's part of the Scale and Enterprise plans.
SSO is about the dashboard. API keys keep working the same way whatever you choose here.
Before you start
- Verified domains. SSO signs in people whose address is at one of your organization's verified domains. Add a domain your people use under Domains and verify it first, even if you don't send email from it.
- One provider per organization, using one protocol. Owners and admins set it up in the organization's settings, under Single sign-on.
Set up your identity provider
Create an application in your identity provider with the values the Single sign-on page shows (they exist before you save anything, so you can create the application first):
| Protocol | Value | Looks like |
|---|---|---|
| OpenID Connect | Redirect URI | https://coss.com/api/auth/sso/callback/<provider id> |
| SAML 2.0 | ACS URL | https://coss.com/api/auth/sso/saml2/sp/acs/<provider id> |
| SAML 2.0 | Entity ID (audience) and metadata URL | https://coss.com/api/auth/sso/saml2/sp/metadata?providerId=<provider id> |
Then fill in your provider's side on coss.com:
- OpenID Connect: the issuer URL (coss.com reads its
/.well-known/openid-configuration; it must be a publichttps://address), the client ID and the client secret. - SAML 2.0: the identity provider's metadata XML, or its SSO URL, entity ID (issuer) and signing certificate.
- Domains: the verified domains whose people sign in through this provider.
Signing in
People choose Sign in with SSO on the sign-in page and enter their work email (or follow a link
to /sso?org=<your organization's slug>), and coss.com sends them to your identity provider.
- Someone signing in for the first time joins your organization as a member. Make them an admin on the Members page, or map directory groups to roles with directory sync.
- Someone who already has a coss.com account with that verified address keeps it: SSO is linked to it.
- Every sign-in is checked again: the address your provider returns must be at one of the provider's domains, and those domains must still be verified.
- An SSO sign-in through your organization's provider also satisfies its two-factor requirement: your identity provider is responsible for multi-factor authentication.
Requiring SSO
Owners can make SSO the only way members and admins open the organization. Anyone who signed in another way is sent to your identity provider when they open it. To turn it on you need:
- an active provider,
- to have signed in with SSO yourself, and
- a password on your own account.
Owners keep break-glass access: they can still sign in with their password (and their authenticator code, if two-factor is required) in case the identity provider fails. The settings page lists owners without a password, who have no such access. Only owners can turn the requirement on or off.
When SSO stops working
- A provider whose domain is no longer verified becomes inactive: nobody can sign in through it until the domain is verified again, or removed from the provider and the provider saved. While SSO is required, members and admins can't open the organization in the meantime; owners still can.
- A domain the provider lists can't be deleted under Domains (
domain_in_use_by_sso): take it off the provider first. - Removing the provider turns SSO off, deletes every account's link to it and signs out everyone who signed in with it. It can't be removed while directory sync is connected.
If you're locked out (for example, your identity provider is gone and no owner has a password), contact coss.com support.
Limits
- One provider per organization.
- Sign-in starts at coss.com (service provider initiated). IdP-initiated SAML and SAML single logout aren't supported.
- A SAML error that happens after your identity provider's step is shown on the callback URL rather than on the sign-in page.
