Directory sync (SCIM)

Let your identity provider add, update and remove your organization's members over SCIM 2.0, and make admins from its groups.

Directory sync lets your identity provider (Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, JumpCloud…) manage your organization's members over SCIM 2.0: people you assign to the coss.com application become members, members of a group you map become admins, and people you deactivate or delete lose access. It's part of the Enterprise plans.

Directory sync needs single sign-on: people it adds sign in through your identity provider, and only addresses at the SSO provider's domains can be provisioned.

Connect your directory

Owners and admins connect it in the organization's settings, under Directory sync. The organization has one connection. Give your identity provider:

  • the SCIM base URL: https://coss.com/api/auth/scim/v2, and
  • a bearer token, created on the same page. Pick how long it lasts (90 days, 1 year or 2 years) and copy it at once: it isn't shown again.

Up to two tokens work at a time, so you can replace one without a gap: create a new token, update your identity provider, then revoke the old one. When every token has expired or been revoked, syncing stops until you create a new one.

What your directory controls

Users are matched by their primary email address (or userName when they have none).

  • Group roles: map a group's name to the admin or member role. Names are matched without regard to case, and saving the mappings applies them to every directory user at once. Groups do nothing else.
  • Owners are never changed. Directory sync never adds, demotes or removes an owner. If your directory deactivates someone who is an owner here, the page warns you; remove or demote them on the Members page yourself.
  • Members your directory manages can't be removed or have their role changed in the dashboard (making one an owner is still possible): change them in your directory.
  • An existing coss.com account with a matching, verified address joins as it is. Your directory never rewrites its name or other details.
  • While the directory is connected, signing in with SSO needs an active user in it (owners excepted), so people you deactivate can't sign in again through your identity provider.
  • While the organization is suspended, nobody is added or promoted; removals still apply.

Connecting, disconnecting, tokens and group roles are recorded in the audit log, and the page lists the connection's recent activity.

Disconnecting

Disconnect makes every token stop working at once. Members the directory added stay, as ordinary members you manage on the Members page, and anyone at your SSO domains can sign in with SSO again. Disconnecting a large directory may take more than one step: the page shows "Disconnecting" until you finish it.

The SSO provider can't be removed while a directory is connected: disconnect the directory first.
