Acceptable Use Policy

Last updated

This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") describes what is not allowed on COSS. It is part of our Terms of Service and applies to every customer, every member of a customer's organization, and anyone who uses the Services through a customer's account or API keys. Violating it is a breach of the Terms.

Email deliverability is shared: one sender's abuse can get the platform's infrastructure blocked for everyone. We enforce this policy so that the messages of every customer keep reaching the inbox.

1. Prohibited content

You may not use the Services to send, store or link to content that:

  • is illegal, or promotes or facilitates illegal activity;
  • sexually exploits or endangers children in any way, including child sexual abuse material. We report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and to law enforcement;
  • is phishing, or tries to collect passwords, payment details or other credentials under false pretenses;
  • contains or links to malware, ransomware, spyware or any other malicious code;
  • is fraudulent or deceptive, including scams, advance-fee fraud, fake invoices, impersonation of another person or brand, or misleading claims about health, financial returns or products;
  • threatens, harasses, intimidates or incites violence against any person or group, or promotes hatred based on protected characteristics;
  • shares intimate images of a person without their consent, or sexually explicit material sent without the recipient's request;
  • infringes intellectual property, privacy or publicity rights of others; or
  • offers regulated goods or services (such as weapons, drugs, gambling or financial services) without the licenses and age restrictions the law requires.

2. Prohibited sending practices

You may not:

  • send unsolicited bulk messages (spam). Send only to people who asked to hear from you, or with whom you have a relationship that makes your message expected and lawful;
  • use purchased, rented, harvested, scraped or shared address lists, or addresses obtained without the recipient's knowledge, including through co-registration or "list sharing";
  • send marketing messages without a working unsubscribe mechanism, or keep sending after someone opts out. Honor opt-outs promptly, and within the time the law requires;
  • disguise who you are. Use accurate sender names, From addresses and subject lines, and send only from domains you control and have verified with us;
  • evade our protections, for example by spreading sending across several accounts, organizations or domains to avoid reputation limits ("snowshoeing"), re-adding addresses removed by suppression, or using random or rotating content to avoid content screening;
  • send to addresses you know are invalid, or keep sending to addresses that bounce;
  • use the Services for list-bombing, email harassment, or to flood a mailbox or server; or
  • use mailbox simulator or sandbox addresses to artificially improve your organization's metrics.

You must comply with every law that applies to your messages, including the U.S. CAN-SPAM Act, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act where relevant, Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), the EU and UK GDPR, and national ePrivacy rules.

3. Bounce and complaint rates

High bounce and complaint rates are the clearest sign of a problem list or unwanted mail. We measure them for each organization, per recipient, over a rolling window, and exclude suppressed recipients and mailbox-simulator addresses. As a guide, today's default thresholds over 7 days are:

SignalWarning atLive sending may be suspended at
Bounce rate (permanent bounces)4%8%
Spam complaint rate0.08%0.3%

Rates are only judged once enough messages have been sent to make them meaningful. These thresholds are stricter than those of most mailbox providers, and we may change them, set them per organization, or act on other signals. A warning is shown in the dashboard and the API, sent to your account.* webhooks, and emailed to your organization's owners and administrators.

4. Content screening

We automatically screen a sample of messages sent from live environments, using automated systems including AI models, for spam, phishing, malware and fraud. A message judged highly likely to be abusive is not delivered (it fails with the reason content_rejected), and the sending organization's live sending is suspended pending review. See our Privacy Policy for how screening handles personal data.

5. Security and platform abuse

You may not:

  • probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the Services, or breach their security or authentication measures, except as permitted by our responsible disclosure program at cal.com/security;
  • access or try to access data, accounts or organizations that are not yours;
  • interfere with or disrupt the Services, other customers or any network, including by overloading the API or attempting denial of service;
  • circumvent rate limits, sending quotas, suspensions or other restrictions;
  • share API keys outside your organization, publish them, or use them in client-side code;
  • resell, white-label or provide the Services to third parties as your own sending platform without our written agreement; or
  • use webhook endpoints to target systems you do not own or are not authorized to test.

6. Enforcement

If we believe this policy has been violated, we may act immediately and without prior notice, depending on the severity and our assessment of the risk. We may:

  • refuse to deliver, or fail, specific messages;
  • warn your organization;
  • suspend live sending for your organization, revoke API keys, or suspend your account;
  • terminate your account under the Terms; and
  • report illegal activity to law enforcement and cooperate with investigations.

A suspension is never lifted automatically. To request a review, write to legal@cal.com with your organization and what you have changed. We are not liable for any loss caused by our enforcement of this policy in good faith.

7. Reporting abuse

If you received unwanted, fraudulent or harmful email sent through COSS, please report it to legal@cal.com with the subject line "Abuse report" and, if you can, the full message including its headers. To unsubscribe from a sender's messages, use the unsubscribe link in the message or contact the sender directly: they control their mailing list.

Report security vulnerabilities as described at cal.com/security.

8. Changes

We may update this policy as threats and laws change. We will post the updated version here and change the "Last updated" date. Material changes are announced as described in the Terms of Service.
