Content storage
Keep no copy of your emails' content once they are sent.
By default, coss.com keeps every email you send, content included, for the
email retention period, so you can read it back in the dashboard and through
the API. If your emails carry data you'd rather not have stored anywhere else, such as health
records, one-time links or financial details, set the environment's content storage to discard:
coss.com then keeps an email's content only until it is sent.
Turning it on
Under Content storage in the environment's dashboard page, or through the API:
await ...({ : "discard" });
const { : } = await ...();
.(?.); // "discard"The setting belongs to the API key's environment (so development can keep content for debugging while production discards it), and changing it needs a key that can send email. Every change is recorded in the organization's audit log.
What is discarded
Once an email is sent, fails or is canceled, coss.com clears its:
- subject (an empty string from then on),
htmlandtextbodies,- custom
headers, - template variables, and
- attachment filenames (attachment bytes are never kept after sending, whatever the setting).
Everything you need to follow delivery stays: the sender and recipient addresses, tags,
category, the status of the email and of each recipient, delivery events, opens and clicks, and
attachment sizes and types. Webhook events and log lines of these emails never include the subject
(it is an empty string), and API request logs show only the length of each content field.
Until the email leaves the queue, its content is kept so it can be sent: a scheduled email keeps it until its time comes, and an email held for a retry keeps it until it is sent or fails. The response to the send itself still includes the content.
An email reports what happened in content_storage:
const { : } = await ..();
.(?.); // { mode: "discard", discarded_at: "2026-10-16T10:00:01.000Z" }Each email keeps the setting that applied when it was sent: switching back to store doesn't bring
back the content of emails sent while it was discard, and switching to discard doesn't remove
the content of emails already sent.
Good to know
- Click tracking needs your links to redirect them, so an email with click tracking keeps its
tracked URLs (and
email.clickedevents name the URL). Turn click tracking off for these emails if their links carry personal data. - The setting covers emails you send. Emails you receive are kept with their content for you to fetch, and you can delete one, content included, at any time.
- A broadcast's own content is kept until you delete the broadcast; its emails follow the setting like any other.
- Tags and categories are always kept, so don't put personal data in them.
